History

Holy Family Lutheran Church held it’s first service on September 19, 1971 in Sir John Franklin High School with pastor & medical doctor Cezar Heine officiating.  It would later officially organize as a congregation on May 30, 1972 the following year.

The name Holy Family was chosen with the recognization that “we are Christ’s family and because we trust God and each another we must weather the trials and heartaches that come to every family while seeking to be understanding, loving and forgiving.”  Our very name has shaped who we have become, and as the size of our congregation has changed over the years as people move in and out of Yellowknife, it remains as true today as it was back then.

Served by numerous pastors throughout the years, Holy Family has always proven adaptable to the changing environment around us.  Whether we have met in schools, church houses, or as we currently do in the chapel of Northern United Place (since 1989), we have sought to explore the grace of God in our lives with a sense of adventure, perseverance, and profound trust that God is with us and is calling us to a life of important service in the community of Yellowknife.
